So, title says it all. I bought KotOR I on Steam because I thought they will deliver a version that works on Windows 8.1, but they fooled me. It crashes every time right after the character creation (while the loading screen), regardless of everything I tried.

This is how it looks like: http://puu.sh/ddsRy.jpg ('Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic has stopped working')
Yes, I read the sidebar in this subreddit. Yes, I google'd for severel hours, but I still couldn't manage to fix it. This is what I tried:
- reinstalling
- verifying the game files with Steam
- disabling the Steam-Overlay for this game
- starting the game by using the swkotor.exe-file instead of Steam
- setting 'Run as administrator' in the swkotor.exe-file
- setting 'Run in compatibility mode: Windows XP (SP2)'
- removing the 'Read only' attribute from all game files
- replacing the Mss32.dll with various versions, including the one linked in this reddit's sidebar
- using the swconfig.exe to disable movies
- using the swconfig.exe to disable the hardware mouse
- using the swconfig.exe to switch to 800x600
- using the swconfig.exe to disable V-sync
- copying the atioglxx.dll-file to the game's root directory because someone said his game had problem finding it and that fixed it for him
- editing the swkotor.ini-file to enable window mode (which works but it still crashes at the same point)
- editing the swkotor.ini-file by adding the line 'Disable Vertex Buffer Objects=1' because the thread in the sidebar says it's a fix for AMD graphics cards
- setting the cpu-core affinity to only 1 core by using the task managar
- setting the cpu-core affinity to only 1 core by modifying the target of a shortcut
I'm running Windows 8.1 with an AMD R9 290.
So, I'm really desperate right now :( and I don't know what to try next. I hope you guys can help me fixing this wonderful game so it can run.

Posted byKotor Crash On New Game Fix
HK-47
1 year agoKotor I works perfectly. With Kotor II (gog version, unmodded), the second the opening cinematic ends, the game crashes. The fix in the sidebar was apparently already implemented in my version at installation. Any help?
I have windows 10 64bit version, Intel Core i3-6100U 2x2.30GHz, 8GB ram, and Intel HD Graphics 520.
One fix I've found was to disable frame buffer effects, but they're disabled by default and can't even be enabled. I've also tried installing patches, but none of them work (my guess is it's already patched).
Edit: if anyone's interested - I bought the steam version and it worked without me having to do anything; that includes tinkering with any settings. I AM SO HAPPY!
